AIS© 2005 represents a major revision of the injury scaling dictionary. The format of the AIS© 2005 dictionary includes two new columns to assist the coder in relating 2005 codes to AIS 98 codes. There are also a significant number of new codes added in 2005. The net result is almost 2,000 codes and three columns of seven-digit numbers.
AIS© 2005 Update 2008 is the culmination of several initiatives. Most prominent is the addition of the predicted Functional Capacity Index which scores each injury from 5 (perfect state) to 1 (worst possible state). This work was directed by Dr. Ellen Mackenzie at Johns Hopkins University.
Second, we have added several new anatomic descriptors, including (but not limited to) changes to Palate, addition of Appendix and Pectoral Muscle, and modified some of the abdominal organ injury descriptors.
Third, rules for coding burns and degloving injuries have been changed in this edition and other rules have been further clarified.
Finally, some typographical and formatting errors were corrected.
